My painting “Squaring the Circle”

My painting “Squaring the Circle” will go on view next Monday 16th May at a Federation of Canadian Artists Gallery on Granville Island.

The Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA) is a registered charity founded in 1941 by professional Canadian working artists including Group of Seven luminaries Lawren Harris, Arthur Lismer, and A.Y. Jackson. The first National Executive Council was led by Andre Bieler, and Lawren Harris was the BC region’s first Chairman. Other notable founding members included Emily Carr and the Honorable Mark Kearley.

The Federation Gallery is located on Granville Island, in the heart of Vancouver’s art and culture community. Get Inspired

The term ‘squaring the circle’ refers to a geometry problem. It involves constructing a square out of a circle by using only a limited number of steps and a compass and straight edge. I’m not a geometry buff and I’ve rarely used a compass or straight edge in my art. I can identify with the idea though, as I’ve often felt like the world around me expected me to fit in better, be more square or more rigid and disciplined. I’ve resisted it’s attempts to change me into something else in just a few deft steps. I’ve preferred not to change myself.

“Squaring the Circle” comes with a certificate of authenticity.
